Join the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club (KNSC) for friendship, community service, enjoyment of nature, and healthy exercise.
The mission of the KNSC is to promote the sport of cross-country skiing in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan for both youth and adults, and provide stewardship of the Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids trails. These trails offer unsurpassed skiing, hiking, and biking on pleasantly varied and scenic trails, with breathtaking vistas of gorges, meadows, forests, and the lake.
In Finnish, maasto hiihto means "to ski across the land." The trail was originally developed in the 1980s by a group of Nordic enthusiasts with support from the City of Hancock. Over the years, conditions at the trails declined even as the demand for a more highly groomed ski trail system increased, steering many skiers away from the Maasto Hiihto to other more dependably groomed trails. In 1997, the KNSC stepped in to turn the tide.
The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club (KNSC) was founded as a volunteer resource group to develop and maintain trails with visual delight and a dependably groomed skiing surface. Shortly after its formation, the KNSC adopted the Maasto Hiihto trails. Both the Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids ski trails are operated and maintained through a joint agreement between the club and the City of Hancock.
